Columbus– Herbert Roy Hansen, Sr. passed away on Friday, July 15, 2022 at Tryon Estates in Columbus, NC.

Herb was 93 years old and the son of Louis and Rose (Pado) Hansen.  He was born November 18, 1928 in Perth Amboy, NJ.

Herb was predeceased by his wife Dorothy (Kaepernik) Hansen who was the love of his life to who he was married for 69 wonderful years.  He was also predeceased by his parents, his sister Ruth Stoveken, and his brother-in-law William Kaepernik.

Herb is survived by his son Herb Hansen and his wife Annette Leps of Lutherville, MD, his daughter Wendy Hudson and her husband William Hudson of Colts Neck, NJ, two granddaughters, two great-grandsons, sister-in-law Carol Kaepernik of Seminole, FL, and brother-in-law James Stoveken.  He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and their families.

Herb grew up in Metuchen, NJ and he and Dorothy raised their family in Menlo Park, NJ.  They moved to Columbus, NC in 1990 and to Tryon Estates in 2014.

Herb was a master carpenter.  He built the family homes and built many beautiful pieces of furniture for those homes.  He worked for Automatic Toll Systems for many years overseeing the maintenance of toll equipment on many roads in the northeastern US.

Family and his many friends were very important to Herb.  Herb and Dorothy were active square dancers for many years, and they developed many friends doing this. Herb loved to travel.  He looked back fondly on cross-country trips with his family when he was young, and he and Dorothy traveled widely across the country and took many cruises.  They also enjoyed a few trips to Europe and Herb’s last trip to England was when he was 90 years old. Herb and Dorothy were very involved with the Polk County Historical Museum in Columbus for many years. Herb enjoyed playing bocce and billiards with his friends.

The memorial service will be 10 AM Saturday, July 23, 2022, at Tryon Estates and his ashes will be interred there.
