Landrum High School Football Preview
Heading into his ninth year as the Cardinals Head Coach, Jason Farmer, the 2018-19 2A Upper State Coach of the Year, will be looking to improve on a 4-6 (1-2) 2021-22 season that ended with a first-round playoff loss to Newberry, all while adjusting to the competition of moving to a new conference with Landrum returning to 2A Region-1 after spending the last two seasons in 2A Region-2.
The team will look to sophomore quarterback Titus Poore, who started multiple games last year, to command Coach Farmer’s Double-Wing attack. Titus is buoyed by a junior-laden offensive line led by Jaden Van Wettering, Ben Ross, and Adam Hyde. The offense will be seeking increased production from running back Colton Link along with receiver Braden Mashtare on the outside.
Seniors Ryan Bunleut, Ronnie Belue, and Beckett Driggers lead the team defensively and will be looking to build on solid seasons last year with the help of Junior Marc Baker, who tied for the team lead in sacks for the 21-22 season.
The move back to a AA Region-1 isn’t the only return for Landrum this upcoming year, as they rekindle the Thermal Belt rivalry with a road trip to Polk County on Sept. 9.
“I’ve known Coach Ollis over at Polk for a while, and we’re glad to be playing each other again. Rivalries are important to high school football, and for the kids on our team, that will always be a big game,” coach Farmer said Thursday.
The Cardinal’s campaign begins with a home scrimmage versus Brevard on August 13 at Landrum Football Field, located at 18818 Asheville Highway. Their away schedule is highlighted by early season non-region matchups against Polk County, Blue Ridge, and perennial 2A-powerhouse Abbeville. The Card’s home schedule begins September 2 versus St. Joseph’s, followed by Spartanburg Christian on September 16, Chesnee on Sept. 30, Ninety-Six on October 7, and Liberty on Oct. 21.
