Landrum and Tryon residents report feeling quake at the same time as confirmed earthquake near Elgin, S.C.

UPSTATE––A 3.6 magnitude earthquake was confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) near Elgin, South Carolina at 7:02 pm on Wednesday. Located 25 miles northeast of Columbia, this quake follows several smaller quakes earlier in the day and nearly a dozen around Elgin over the last month or so. A 3.5 magnitude quake was also confirmed near Lugoff, S.C. earlier in the day.

Wednesday evening’s earthquake had a depth of approximately 2.9 km according to reports, meaning it was more likely to be felt over a wider area, and it was claimed to be felt in the Upstate and Tryon areas.

Multiple Landrum and Tryon residents claim to have heard a massive boom around the time of the earthquake. Some Landrum residents have reported that their house shook.

Landrum resident Lois Langford says, “What it sounded like was a very loud boom. We were on the carport, and my sister felt some vibration. It was exactly the same time they said the earthquake happened.”

Another anonymous Tryon resident says, “It felt like something crashed into our house. The boom was extremely loud, and the house shook, so I thought something hit it from outside.”

On Tuesday, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 2.1 magnitude earthquake approximately 2 miles from Hendersonville, North Carolina.

This is a developing story. Tryon Daily Bulletin will update as more details become available.
