Maggie Holland has been named the 2022 recipient of the Norman L. Spivey Memorial Scholarship. A Polk County High School senior, she is the first female civil engineering recipient and will be attending North Carolina State University this fall. Maggie discovered a passion for math and science in middle school and began working with her dad on construction sites in high school. Her hands-on approach and problem-solving mentality have led her to become a part of “society’s success as we grow our STEM fields and nation towards a safe and innovative future.” We are thrilled to support Maggie in her civil engineering journey.

In partnership with the Sunny View Clubhouse, the Spivey Family has awarded the Norman L. Spivey Memorial Scholarship for the 5th consecutive year. Norman was a Polk County native and a Polk Central High School graduate. He would go on to become a U.S. Marine, a successful civil engineer as well as a passionate conservationist and community volunteer. Norman’s career grew from private land surveying to civil engineer who was tasked with the oversight and management of large-scale, complex construction projects. His attention to detail and work ethic were invaluable to the companies with whom he partnered.

The Spivey family is proud to follow his example and create a tradition of investing in the young people of our community as they seek to further their education and pursue their own passions. Former recipients include John Dougherty (Isothermal Community College), Evan Rimer (UNC Charlotte), Angela Price (Appalachian State University), and Madison Zappia (UNC Asheville). The scholarship is open to rising seniors who are Polk County residents and pursuing careers in the civil engineering or conservation fields.
