Columbus– Nan Collins Shively, widow of Harold “Bud” Shively, died on June 11, 2022, at OakBridge Terrace at Tryon Estates, Columbus, NC, following an extended illness.
Nan was a native of Whiting, Indiana, and moved with Bud to Tryon, NC from Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1989.  She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from DePauw University, where she joined Alpha Chi Omega Sorority and earned a Master of Science degree in Education (Counseling) from Purdue University.
At Purdue, Nan worked as a Career Counselor in the School of Mathematics and Science; in Grand Rapids, she was a Mental Health Counselor at the Women’s Health Center of St. Mary’s Hospital; in Tryon, Nan held the position of Director of Bereavement Services for Hospice of the Carolina Foothills from 1991 until her retirement in 1998.  She continued to serve as a facilitator of Hospice Support Groups through 2001.
Nan was formerly a National Certified Counselor and a member of the North Carolina Counseling Association as well as the American Counseling Association; a member of the PEO Sisterhood and belonged to the Congregational Church (UCC) of Tryon.
Harold “Bud” Shively, Nan’s husband, died in 2008.  She is survived by her son, Dr. Mark W. Hatcher (Cheryl) of North Canton, OH; her daughter, Elizabeth Hatcher of Irvine, CA; three granddaughters, Emily, Kate, and Sarah of North Canton, OH; and many beloved cousins and friends. Nan’s parents and a brother, Thomas George Collins, preceded her in death.
The family would like to thank the staff of OakBridge Terrace at Tryon Estates and the ACTS Home Healthcare team for their kind and compassionate care during the last few weeks.
