In a spirit of cooperation, 4 local performing arts organizations – Shakespeare & Friends, Solstice Theater, Tryon Fine Arts Center, and Tryon Little Theater – will celebrate the performance of the Tony-nominated comedy Enchanted April this spring in Tryon, North Carolina.

This funny and elegant play will run April 21-24, 2022 at Tryon Fine Arts Center. Admission is free in celebration of the return of live theater, made possible by the North Carolina Arts Council and Polk County Community Foundation, in conjunction with Tryon Fine Arts Center. Though tickets are free, cash donations to help support the all-volunteer group of artists will be gratefully accepted at the door.

“As live theater comes back, we thought this was the perfect opportunity for our close-knit performing arts community to work together to bring this beautiful show to life,” said director, and Shakespeare & Friends Co-Founder, Catherine Gillet.

Enchanted April was written by Matthew Barber, based on the novel by Elizabeth von Arnim. The play follows four women in 1920s post-WWI London who rent a villa in Italy to break away from the darkness of winter and their humdrum lives. There, among wisteria blossoms and Mediterranean sunshine, they rediscover themselves in ways that they could never have imagined.

“The topic is so timely,” said Solstice Theatre Artistic Director, and actress, Laura Depta. “It’s all about rediscovering a sense of freedom and joy after years of tragedy.”

Enchanted April was a 2003 Tony Award nominee for Best Play and won the John Gassner Award for Outstanding New American Play.

The New York Times called Enchanted April a “…rarity: a play where every single element falls perfectly into place-a show that leaves you positively glowing.

Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 21 through Saturday, April 23. The Sunday matinee on April 24 will be held at 3 p.m.. Advance reservations are strongly encouraged; limited seating is available for each performance. COVID-19 precautions will be observed.
