Polk County sees heightened risk for wildfires over weekend

Increased fire hazard for our area last week
POLK COUNTY––Polk County was at an increased risk for wildfires this past weekend.
Weather conditions on Saturday posed a high risk for wildfires in the area. Windy conditions along with relative humidity below 35% led to dangerous weather circumstances. Outdoor burning was highly discouraged due to high winds that reached up to 30mph on Saturday.
On March 3 of this year, there were 141 wildfires that took place in North Carolina, which burned up to 531 acres of land, according to the North Carolina Forest Service. Between March 1 and March 15, there were 805 wildfires overall in NC, which burned 2,601 acres across the state.
Between March 15, 2021 and March 15, 2022, there have been 2,057 wildfires in NC, which burned 5,437 acres.
