Tryon celebrates St. Patrick’s Day with parade, concert

TRYON––On Thursday, a St. Patrick’s Parade strolled through downtown Tryon. Large crowds donned their favorite green attire and gathered for the festivities along North Trade Street.
The parade assembled at Roger’s Park at 4:30 p.m. and ended at the intersection of Oak St. and Pacolet St in downtown, concluding with a short concert that included fiddlers, a bagpiper, and a “Parade Princess” singing classic Irish hymns.
Co-orchestrator of the parade Greg Lobas says he hopes the parade will be an annual tradition, as this is the first St. Patrick’s Parade in Tryon.
The parade was sponsored by Knights of Columbus and St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and orchestrated by Tryon residents Greg Lobas and Peg Brunk.
Lobas is from Chicago, and Brunk is from Cleveland, where they had big parades to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. He says he and Brunk were talking about how much they enjoyed the St. Patrick’s Day festivities, when Brunk suggested she and Lobas put on a parade in Tryon.
Lobas says, “I felt that a St. Patrick’s Day parade could work down here in the south because the third largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the country is in Savannah, Georgia. That tells me that people down here have a good response from it.”
Those who marched in the parade included The American Legion, Knights of Columbus, bagpipers and fiddlers, and partitioners from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Classic cars from the Dark Corner Classic Car Show drove through, along with local fire and police departments, a number of Democratic and Republican candidates with floats and the Foothills Humane Society with four-legged friends.
