At its regularly scheduled meeting on Monday, March 14, 2022, the Polk County Board of Education received an update on Polk County Schools’ Career and Technical Education (CTE) Program. Polk County High School CTE Career Development Coordinator Mrs. Lindsey Edwards gave a presentation on the District’s current CTE programs, course areas and future plans. Their remarks included recent efforts to connect with local businesses and organizations to increase communication and involvement in CTE activities. They also discussed an increased focus on careers at the middle school level, and the need to bolster internship and apprenticeship opportunities for students. Board Members expressed their excitement about the existing programs and new directions for CTE, and Superintendent Greene thanked Mrs. Edwards for the hard work of the CTE staff. Other business conducted by the Board:

 

• The Board approved submission of the annual Head Start Continuation Grant which helps fund the District’s Pre-K programs at each elementary school

 

• Assistant Superintendent Dave Scherping received Board approval for the District’s Summer Testing Plan

 

• The Board approved budget amendments and an increase in employee travel reimbursement based on the latest guidance from the Office of State Budget and Management

 

• The Board approved two overnight field trip requests, one for the PCHS Wrestling Team and the other for the FFA Land Judging Team

 

• Assistant Superintendent Dave Scherping gave an update regarding the ongoing HVAC work at Polk County High School, and discussed future work planned for a Pre-K classroom annex at Tryon Elementary School with the Board approving the District’s application for Needs-Based Capital Funding to support the project

 

• Superintendent Aaron Greene updated the Board on current COVID status in the schools and the Board voted unanimously to continue with optional masking and its current approach to the handling of cases

 

The next Polk County Board of Education Meeting will be held on April 11, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. at Stearns Education Center immediately following the Board’s annual budget workshop starting at 3:30 p.m. that same day.
