Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Kicking off the NEA’s Read Across America, local author Robin A. Edgar will visit K-3 graders at Tryon Elementary on Tuesday, March 1 to read and discuss her book about Tryon’s famous Morris the Horse. Edgar will donate $3.00 to the school library for each book sold at the event so families are encouraged to turn in the pre-order form attached to the school flier about the event by February 22.

This popular book, with whimsical illustrations by Ron Mosseller, tells the story of Morris who, having faithfully pulled his cart through the town of Tryon for years, thinks no one cares about him anymore, now that cars and trucks are around. Morris’ outlook on life changes when he meets a skinny little boy who becomes his friend as well as the town hero for getting Morris to finally get up and go!

The story’s message about realizing one’s strong points and working towards achieving them is in keeping with the social and emotional learning keys to growth mindset. School media specialist, Jamie Kilgore, states “Our students love meeting authors! I know it will be special for them to hear a story involving local icon, Morris the Horse.”

A lifestyle journalist for over 35 years, Edgar has also worked with children as a professional actress, mime, and storyteller. The local author’s other books include, In My Mother’ Kitchen; Personal Legacies: Surviving the Great Depression; and Fantastic Recycled Plastic. Mosseller, the former owner of the Mills Mosseller Studio in Tryon and maker of fine rugs and tapestries, worked as an artist and illustrator for almost 70 years. His work on The Day Morris Quit was his last creative endeavor before he passed away.
