Tryon Concert Association presents bass baritone Ryan Speedo Green in concert at TFAC on Friday, February 4, 2022, at 7:30 in the evening.

Mr. Green, an internationally known star of opera, art songs, and oratorios, will present a program of classical and modern music. He will perform arias from  Der Fliegende Holländer by Wagner and  Macbeth by Verdi in addition to art songs by Hugo Wolf, Margaret Bonds, Florence B. Price, Leslie Adams, and Howard Swanson. Several of these songs are Langston Hughes poems set to music. A piece from Mendelssohn’s Elijah is also on the program. These works represent the breadth and depth of tonight’s performer.

Mr. Green made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in 2012 as Mandarin in Turandot. He has also sung Jake in Porgy and Bess, Colline in La bohème, Fasolt in Das Rheingold, and Truffaldino in Ariadne auf Naxos. His most recent Metropolitan Opera role was Uncle Paul in Terence Blanchard’s much-acclaimed Fire Shut Up in My Bones.

Prior to the cancellation of performances due to the pandemic, Mr. Green made his house debuts with the Theatre an der Wien and Palm Beach Opera. He was the first Artist in Residence for the Texas Opera Alliance and held masterclasses and community events for many Texas opera companies.

His orchestral performances include Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony under the baton of Gustavo Dudamel at the Hollywood Bowl. He has appeared at the Mostly Mozart, Tanglewood, and Brevard festivals. Mr. Green sang in Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 at the Ravinia Festival, conducted by Marin Alsop, and the Cleveland Orchestra under Franz Welser-Möst.

Mr. Green’s personal story is one of triumph over adversity. After a troubled childhood, including time spent in a juvenile detention center, he showed such talent that he was given a place at the Governor’s School for the Arts in Virginia, where he studied voice. More recognition followed, and he was chosen for the Metropolitan Opera’s Lindemann Young Artist Development Program. Having earned bachelor and master degrees in music, he is now, as an international star, a role model for aspiring young singers. His story is told in Sing for Your Life, a biography by Daniel Bergner.
