Following a brief illness, Elizabeth (Liz) H. Wyckoff, 95, died on Saturday, November 20, in Saluda, North Carolina. Born on March 5, 1926, In Oak Bluffs, Massachusetts, she was the daughter of the late Henry E. Davies and Kathryn Ross Davies; her older brothers Henry E. Davies, Jr. and Ross O. Davies, predeceased her.
Liz grew up on the water, swimming and sailing on Cape Cod Bay and Nantucket Sound. She graduated from Barnstable High School in 1943 and the University of Rhode Island, Kingston, in 1947. As an undergraduate, she belonged to Delta Zeta sorority, Phi Sigma Honor Society, and was on the URI Rifle Team. She then completed a Master of Science at URI and worked for United Fruit (now Chiquita Banana) in New Haven, CT, as a plant pathologist.
On November 28, 1959, Liz (aka Beth) married Frederick G. Henkel of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. They lived in Bunker Hill, West Virginia for 30 years. During this time, she was an active member of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), Martinsburg. She also worked as the Interlibrary Loan Librarian at the Martinsburg Berkley County Public Library for 14 years.
The Henkel’s retired to Tryon, North Carolina, in the early 1990s. Liz volunteered and briefly worked at the Lanier and Polk County Libraries. Soon, she also took up weaving, a long-time interest that became a passion, at Tryon Arts & Crafts. After Mr.Henkel’s death in 1994, she married Richard H. Wyckoff in 1996 and moved to Saluda. She remained engaged in her favorite pastimes, knitting, weaving, reading, cooking, and walking with her beloved golden retriever, Kuba, until her death.

She is survived by her daughter, Virginia H. Stickney, son-in-law David L., and granddaughter, Samantha E.; stepdaughters Linda Wyckoff and Anne Herrera (Michael) and stepson Richard, and their children and grandchildren; nieces Allyson Ross Davies, and Kathryn D. Bruce, Susan Jones (James), Ellen McCullough (Steven) and nephews Henry E. Davies, Jr. (Claire), and Frederick Taylor (Donna) and their families.
Donations may be made to The Lanier Library, Tryon Arts & Crafts – Weaving Studio, Foothills Humane Society, American Association of University Women, or The Nature Conservancy. A celebration of her life will be held at later date.
