COLUMBUS – Garry Maurice Wood, 67, of Columbus, lost a 14-year battle of declining health and passed away peacefully from complications of Alzheimer’s Sunday morning, December 12, 2021 at Mountain View Assisted Living in Hendersonville.

Born April 11, 1954 in Morganton, NC, he was the son of the late Mary Melveline Wood. Maurice was a graduate of Polk Central High School class of 1968 and was an avid reader and trivia and history buff.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by his life partner, Betty Jean Ford and Marcellus Wood.

Surviving is all his siblings, Linda Jolley (Mike) of Mill Spring, Kathy Biddix (Jerry) of Asheville, Arlene Smith (Jim) of Mill Spring, Cindy Bates (Jerry) of Mill Spring, Joy Ruff (Phillip) of Mill Spring, Vicki Wood of Mill Spring, Ronnie Wood (Nina) of Lake Lure, Gordon Wood (Teresa) of Mill Spring and June Haire (Bud) of Franklin.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 15, 2021 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel with Reverend Ronnie Hodge officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens.
