Tales of Tryon presents Three Notable People

Published 10:55 pm Monday, November 15, 2021

Garland Goodwin will be the presenter of the next Tales of Tryon on November 18, 2021. The presentation will once again be at The Tryon Train Depot at 5:00 pm.

Garland grew up in Tryon, left for careers and service to his country, but thankfully, he came home as so many Polk County folks do. Anyone who reads locally knows how interesting Garland’s local stories are. Many of the people he profiles have sadly passed on, but they live in Goodwin’s memory to be shared with his beloved. This month he will talk about three well-known Tryonites. They might not be world famous but they all had an impact.

Seth Vining Sr. left a legacy from which we all can benefit; the Tryon Daily Bulletin. The World’s Smallest Newspaper is still to this day, the go-to place to find out what is happening in our community. Come and hear of Garland’s work with Mr. Vining when he was young.

Not as well known, but influential nevertheless, is Clement Douglass Stevens. Stevens served as Mayor of Tryon and also as a Magistrate. He owned Tryon Builder’s Supply. He had some eccentricities which Goodwin will relate.

The third profile will be of Mrs. Muriel Massanovich, forever connected to our sister Nina Simone. Miss Mazzy may well be responsible in a way for interesting Garland in piano and piano tuning! He has since tuned many in Tryon and surrounding areas. Miss Mazzy is known in her own right despite being married to the famous artist Lawrence Massanovich. She played a part in Nina Simone’s musical journey to worldwide recognition as a classical, jazz, blues and ballad musician.

The Tryon History Museum and Visitor Center is proud to feature Garland Goodwin in November. Please join us at the Depot on Nov. 18. Refreshments are served at 4:30. The talk begins at 5:00 pm. Masks are encouraged but not required. The next Tales will be held in February. Stay tuned for further information
