The Tryon History Museum has scheduled another popular “Tales of Tryon” talk  at the Tryon Depot (also known as Parsec Financial) on Thursday, October 21 at 5:00 p.m.

 

The special guest speaker in October is Susan Story Speight, a local author and historian.  Susan is well-known for her recent book,  White Oak Mountain, North Carolina.  The publication also features the description, “The Cast of Characters and the Places They Loved”

 

Susan, who lives on White Oak Mountain, has researched the history of this unique location and will share it during her talk. She will share the fruits of extensive research into the more-distant past.  In her latest book she brings to light much material that has never been published. Her first book, As We Climb the Mountain, Up the Winding Roadway, Camp Skyuka 1954-1985 was written in 2006.  This recent publication is a mountain enthusiast’s collection of facts and details about the area, embellished with stories of the characters that visited and lived there.

 

Located in Columbus, White Oak Mountain is often referred to as the “first peak” since it is the beginning of the Blue Ridge Mountains, in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains range. 

 

Susan will share with listeners the events of the past 200 years as they occurred on the mountain, as well as stories of the first visitors and why they came.

 

Copies of Susan’s book will be available for purchase at the talk and refreshments will be  available starting at 4:30pm.
