Shooting happened while man was working in Spartanburg Thursday

LANDRUM—A Landrum man was shot and killed Thursday afternoon while working in Spartanburg, S.C. 

The Spartanburg County Coroner’s Office said their office was called to 225 Amelia St., Spartanburg on Thursday afternoon to a report of a police related shooting. 

Perry James McIntyre, 49, of E. Brookwood Dr., Landrum was identified as one of the victims, according to Spartanburg County Coroner Rusty Clevenger. 

McIntyre was a Charter employee and was working at the residence at the time of the shooting. 

The coroner’s office said McIntyre was found inside the residence. 

Clevenger said his office will discover more during the autopsy regarding the cause of death. The autopsy was scheduled for Friday. 

There was another death associated with the shooting. Shannon Earl Smith, 45, of 225 Amelia St., Spartanburg, was pronounced dead at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Smith was transported to the hospital and died in the operating room with gun shot wounds, according to Clevenger. 

Clevenger said more will follow on Smith’s cause of death and by law enforcement regarding their investigation. 

An officer was also shot, but is expected to survive. In total, 2 people died and 4 people were shot and injured, according to Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office reports. Smith is believed to be the shooter. There were 2 Spartanburg Water employees and a woman were also shot and injured, but they are also expected to recover. 

The incident occurred near Cleveland Park around 3 p.m. Thursday. 

The Spartanburg Police Department originally responded to the home for 2 people who had been shot and they believed originally there was another victim in the house. Spartanburg Police officers said shots were fired at officers from inside the home. The officer struck by gunfire was shot in the arm and 2 other deputies reportedly returned fire. 

“Please keep the families of Mr. McIntyre and Mr. Smith as well as others injured in this traumatic event in your thoughts and prayers during this time of loss, injury and grief,” Clevenger said Friday.
