RUTHERFORDTON–Millicent Ann Mahaffey Scoggin, 86, passed away peacefully at home on June 8, 2021. She will be laid to rest on Sunday, June 13, 2021, following a graveside service at 3:00 p.m. at Sandy Springs First Baptist Church, Rutherfordton, NC. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 15, 2021, at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel-by-the-Sea Baptist Church on Tybee Island, GA.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Dacus Lee Mahaffey, and her beloved husband, Pharis Emerson Scoggin. She is survived by daughter Faith Glaser (Bob), sons Daniel and David Scoggin, seven grandchildren, and thirteen great-grandchildren.

She was born on July 11, 1934, in Belton, SC, to Roy and Donia Mahaffey. From a very young age, Millie loved and served her Savior. She began to play the piano for church as a teenager at Second Baptist Church of Belton and continued to play until she was 84 years old, serving the last 20 years at Chapel-by-the-Sea Baptist Church on Tybee Island, GA. She met her husband Pharis at a revival when she played the piano, and he led the music. After marrying three months later in October, 1952, they served together in ministry for 38 years until his death in October 1990.

Millie was loving and patient, generous and kind, her sweet spirit evident till her final hour. As her son David lovingly cared for her as her health failed, she would wake with a smile for him every morning  and every time he came home, the same smile she had for every one of you who knew her. Even as dementia stole her ability to speak, she had a smile for those who cared for her.

We are most grateful to Liz Maher and Pat McPhatter for excellent hospice care, and to her loving caregivers Lisa Prentiss, Luann Ball, and grandson Dustyn Scoggin.
