The Polk County Board of Education recently adopted academic calendars for both the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years.

Prior to approving the calendars at its April meeting, the Board of Education requested administrators change the current year-by-year adoption to a two-year calendar process. A district calendar committee comprised of teachers, family representatives and administrators offer calendar recommendations to the board each year.

An existing state law regulating school calendars dictates much of the current school calendar and offers little flexibility to local boards of education. There was some hope more local flexibility would be given to the district this year after the passing of a bill in the North Carolina House sponsored by Representative Jake Johnson, but it appears that bill will not pass the Senate.

While changes could still be made to the 2022-2023 calendar during next year’s process, having both years approved gives students, families and staff a longer look ahead for planning purposes. The approved calendars apply to all schools except Polk County Early College, whose 2021-2022 calendar will be approved in May and is different to facilitate alignment with its Isothermal Community College partnership.
