Susan Speight, author, to hold book signing October 24

 

A quarry man from Ohio, a millionaire from New York, a former First Lady and a notorious mountain man are just some of the characters featured in this new book, “White Oak Mountain, North Carolina, The Cast of Characters and the Places They Loved”. Local resident and author Susan Story Speight has chronicled the history and goings-on at Polk County’s very own White Oak Mountain.

The story begins in 1887 and continues through the late 1980’s. Speight brings to light much material that has never been published before. She has written a fascinating history which includes both first-hand and second-hand accounts. The author has documented the mountain’s history with 200 photographs. Folks interested in local history should get excited for this new history book that is literally hot off the press. 

On Saturday, October 24, the Polk County Historical Museum is sponsoring an official book signing inside the museum at 60 Walker Street in downtown Columbus. The event will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Don’t miss this opportunity to meet the author and get a personalized copy of this new book about White Oak Mountain’s history.

“This book has been a labor of love,” said author Susan Speight. “My husband and I have made our home on White Oak Mountain since 2006. We enjoy living here and I felt a strong desire to share the colorful history of the mountain and its previous residents.”

The Polk County Historical Association Board wants to protect visitors during the official book signing so face masks will be required and they are asking everyone to social distance six feet apart. The book signing will be a drop-in format but anyone wanting to set up a specific time to “meet the author” is asked to call the museum at 828-894-3351 on Thursday or Saturday mornings. Appointments will be made every 15 minutes.
