TRYON—The mural at the Harmon Field open-air gym has been completed.

The mural was part of Tryon resident Mason Lassiter’s vision for the gymnasium before his sudden death last year. Lassiter, 17, was working on renovations to the gym where he had been playing basketball since he was a child for his senior project. He had raised about $11,000 and his family and friends and the community took on the project after his death.

Artist Dustin Spagnola, of Asheville, painted the mural on the back wall of the gym. He is also painting the stairwell to blend it into the design of the mural.

New floors were completed over the summer and new basketball goals were installed recently.

Lassiter’s dream was to resurface the floor, replace the goals, to add benches, a trashcan, a water fountain and to have a mural painted depicting the Tryon area.
