County adds another death in the Columbus zip code

POLK COUNTY—Polk County added another 27 cases of COVID-19 last week, going from 232 cases on Aug. 21 to 259 cases on Aug. 28, according to Polk County health officials.

The county also added another death, making the toll 7 deaths last week. There have been 4 deaths in the Saluda zip code, 2 deaths in the Tryon zip code and the 7th death last week was from the Columbus zip code, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

Polk County has completed 4,532 tests, with 259 positives, 4,135 negatives and 7 deaths. There are currently 207 patients presumed recovered, so 52 active positives as of Friday.

There were also 51 tests pending as of Friday.

The percent positive was 11.2 percent on Friday, according to the Polk County Health Department.

Cumulative hospitalizations in Polk County were 23, with 2 outbreaks resulting in 21 cumulative cases.

Most of the positive cases in the county have been in women, with 54.44 percent of the cases, compared to 45.56 percent of the county’s cases being men.

Most of the cases have been in people aged 65 and older at almost 90 of the total positive cases, compared to more than 60 of the cases being in people age 25-49; more than 50 of the cases being in people age 50-64 and about 20 each in people age 0-17 and 18-24.

As of Tuesday afternoon, North Carolina had a total of 167,313 lab-confirmed cases of the virus and had completed 2,256,172 tests, according to the NCDHHS.

Buncombe County had 2,492 positive cases and 72 deaths; Henderson County had 1,695 cases and 60 deaths; Rutherford County had 942 cases and 19 deaths and Transylvania County had 261 case and 2 deaths, according to the NCDHHS.
