TRYON — Stephen Carroll Brady died on August 9, 2020 at Mission Hospital in Asheville, NC after a brief stay.

 

He was the son of the late R. Holland Brady, Sr. and Julia Carroll Brady and was born in Tryon at the old St. Luke’s Hospital on Carolina Drive on August 30, 1932. He was an Eagle Scout and a 1950 graduate of Tryon High School. He graduated in 1954 from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B. S. degree in Business Administration and was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. Following his graduation, he joined the family insurance agency, Brady Insurance, in Tryon, which was founded by his father in 1928.

In 1956, Carroll entered the US Army serving at Fort Jackson, SC, Fort Holabird, MD and Fort McPherson, GA with the Counterintelligence Corps. He married June Hamrick on August 18, 1956 in Mount Holly, NC. Following his tour in the Army, he returned to work at Brady Insurance for his entire career. He and June worked side by side at the agency until their joint retirement in 2000. The business continues today as Main Street Insurance Group with son Stephen and grandson Wesley representing four generations.

 

During Carroll’s career, he worked with various community groups including the Kiwanis Club, Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts, Morehead Scholarship Committee and the Firemen’s Relief Fund. He was a life-long member of Tryon First Baptist Church where at his death, he was the church’s longest standing member. When asked about his philosophy of life, he said he tried to live each day as best he could, being respectful of others and listening to what they had to say. He had a great love for trains and our Blue Ridge Mountains. In earlier days, he loved the outdoors, hiking and traveling.

 

Carroll was preceded in death by his parents and his brother R. Holland Brady, Jr. He is survived by his wife June Hamrick Brady, his daughters Susan Brady of Tryon and Martha Brady Burwell and spouse John of Greenville, SC, his son Stephen Brady and spouse Nancy of Tryon. Carroll is also survived by five grandchildren: Dr. Wynne Morris of Carrboro, NC, Holland Morris of Salt Lake City, UT, Stephen Morris of Tryon, Emily Brady Smith of Chesapeake, VA and Wes Brady of Tryon. He also recently became a great-grandfather to two twin girls Elliana and Everette Smith of Chesapeake, VA.

 

There will be a private family graveside service at Tryon First Baptist later this week with the Reverend Dr. Jeff Harris officiating.
