SALUDA — Shirley Surles Singleton, 90, died on Monday, July 13, 2020 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC.

 

She was born in Pelham, Georgia to James and Jewel Surles, one of six children. She was a graduate of Jackson High School in Miami, FL where she was a member of the school’s basketball team.

 

On June 20, 1948, she married Ollice Monroe Singleton. They lived in Miami for 39 years, where they raised their children. They moved to Saluda, NC in 1987. They quickly made Saluda their home where they enjoyed new friends, a new church and different types of gardening. Shirley enjoyed flowers, birds, cooking and family.

 

Surviving is her husband of seventy-two years, Ollice M. Singleton; four children: Larry Singleton (Gloria Singleton) of Orlando, FL, Garry Singleton, deceased (Gwendolyn Singleton) of Macclenny, FL, David Singleton of Altamonte Springs, FL and Julie Singleton of Saluda, NC. Also surviving are five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

 

A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.

 

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Saluda or the Elizabeth House.
