COLUMBUS—Long-time Harmon Field Board of Supervisors member Benny Smith is retiring.

The Polk County Board of Commissioners met Monday and recognized Smith for his 20 years of service on the board.

Polk County Commissioner vice chair Tommy Melton said Smith has ensured that Harmon Field will be enjoyed by citizens for many generations to come because of his dedication.

Melton said he has known Smith his entire life as they went to school together and played football together at what is now Harmon Field. He said he does not know many citizens that have committed their entire lives to volunteering like Smith.

Smith is a former Polk County Commissioner, served on the hospital board and was chairman of the county board of commissioners when the Womack building was constructed.

“It’s going to be impossible to replace Benny,” Melton said. “He goes to Harmon Field 3 to 4 times a day just to check on it. Harmon Field is special to all of us. Benny has made Harmon Field what it is today.”

Commissioners presented Smith with a plaque thanking him for his service. Smith said it has been a pleasure serving Harmon Field and thanked commissioners for their help with the park over the years.
