Independent test discovers E. coli in Lake Adger

 

MILL SPRING—Polk County announced over the weekend that E. coli was found at the Lake Adger marina.

Polk County Manager Marche Pittman said the county was notified on Friday that Mountain True had performed an independent test at the marina and discovered an unusually high level of the bacteria Escherichia coli, or E. coli in the water.

“These levels are probably due to the excessive amounts of rain over the past few days,” county officials said in a release. “Because some strains of E. coli can cause illness, Polk County Local Government is sharing this as a precaution for anyone who might be considering swimming in the Lake Adger marina over the Memorial Day weekend.”

Pittman said the county got a test Monday morning with the Broad River Water Authority performing an additional test. The county expects to get the results of the test on Wednesday.

There have been no reports of anyone being sick from swimming in the lake. Pittman said the county sent out the release and is doing additional testing out of caution.

The county will share the results of the additional testing as soon as the results are received.
