Polk County Schools food service team prepared almost 10k meals for students
Polk County Schools campuses may be closed at present, but that hasn’t stopped the district’s food service staff from making certain students have healthy meals.
Food service workers have remained hard at work during the current closing of school campuses due to the coronavirus pandemic. Polk County Schools is providing free meals each weekday to all county children ages 0-18, with those meals available from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the four elementary schools in the county.
Staff members from throughout the district are at each location to help distribute those meals, but the food service staff fuels the process by assembling bags that contain both that day’s lunch and breakfast for the following day.
“I am proud of how our child nutrition staff have worked together to serve the needs of their students,” said Jennifer Peeler. child nutrition director for Polk County Schools. “Some of the staff are working in a different kitchen, but they are all working together to ensure our students have breakfast and lunch each day.”
In the first eight days of the program, more than 4,700 bags have been distributed, meaning Polk County Schools food service staff members have prepared almost 10,000 meals for area children.
“We couldn’t be prouder of our Polk Schools Food Service Director Jennifer Peeler and her entire staff,” said PCS Superintendent Aaron Greene. ”Along with many other wonderful school and district employees, they quickly adapted their operations and built a district-wide preparation and delivery system that provided approximately 10,000 meals to families over the past two weeks.
“They are to be commended for their commitment and dedication.”
