Habitat for Humanity to lease portion of old garage

COLUMBUS—Polk County is leasing space in the old school bus garage to Thermal Belt Habitat for Humanity.

The Polk County Board of Commissioners met last week and heard from county manager Marche Pittman. Pittman said the county will lease the space for six months for $1 a year.

The county owns the old school bus garage, located on Locust Street, which the county now houses its Polk County Transportation vans. Habitat officials asked to use some outside space as well as occasional use of the end bay for temporary and short-term storage of building materials and for the assembly of walls before transporting the walls to home sites.

Commissioners unanimously approved the lease for approximately 1,200 square feet located with the property.

The lease includes that Habitat will keep the premises in good repair and condition and that the county reserves the right to enter and inspect the premises at reasonable times and to make necessary repairs to the premises.

Habitat opened an office earlier this year in downtown Columbus near the courthouse and Womack building.
