Fundraisers being organized for mother, daughter burned in fire

GREEN CREEK—The Polk County community is rallying for a Green Creek family who lost everything in a fire and have two family members at the Augusta Burn Center with injuries.

Some members of the community are holding a spaghetti supper at the Green Creek Fire Department on Dec. 14 from 4-8 p.m. All money raised at the supper will go to the Barnett family.

Clothing can also be dropped off at the fire station from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. any day of the week at the Green Creek Fire Department.

The fire occurred at the Barnett home on Saturday, Nov. 23 around 12:47 p.m. at 1043 Sandy Springs Road in Green Creek.

Polk County Fire Marshal Bobby Arledge said the fire engulfed about 75 percent of the home, which makes the home a total loss.

There were five fire departments who were dispatched to the fire, as well as Polk County EMS and the Polk County Rescue Squad because of reports that two residents were burned. Robin and Crystal Barnett were originally taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center, but were later transferred to the Augusta Burn Center in Georgia.

There is a GoFundMe page set up to help the family with medical bills and to replace items they need.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation by the Polk County Fire Marshal’s Office, but Arledge said it likely started in the living room.
