TRYON – Harry Jan Sams, 90, of Tryon passed away Tuesday morning, November 19, 2019 at Autumn Care of Saluda.

 

Born in Morristown, TN, he was the son of the late Virgie O. Sams Killian. Mr. Sams was a graduate of Carson Newman College earning a degree in political science. After college, he went on to serve in the U. S. Army during the Korean War. Following his military service, he was a writer for the Daily Gazette in Morristown. Mr. Sams eventually became a sales agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Company retiring in 1992.

Mr. Sams was a lifelong Episcopalian and was a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in Tryon serving as an usher. He was an active member of the Polk County Democratic Party and a member of the American Legion Post #250 in Tryon.

 

Surviving is his wife of 34 years, Harriett P. Sams; one son, Harry Ronnie Sams (Patricia) of Huntsville, AL; one stepson, Dr. Michael Beeler, DDS (Angela) of Norris, TN; two step-daughters, Susan B. Walker (Danny) of Martin, TN and Janet B. Turner (Rocky) of Spartanburg; two grandchildren, Garrick Sams, Jessica Odum and seven grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren; one brother, James Sams (Margie) of Little Rock, AR.

 

A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, November 23, 2019 in the McFarland Funeral Chapel with Father Robert Ard officiating with military rites conducted by the Polk County Veterans Memorial Honor Guard.

 

Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens, Columbus.
