Raleigh, N.C. – During his first 3 weeks in office, newly appointed State House Representative Jake Johnson (R-113) votes in favor of two critical bills that he believes will greatly benefit the lives of veterans and their families here in North Carolina.
Johnson cast his vote in favor of the NC Military and Veterans Act of 2019. This act would allow for certain military veterans and other individuals to be charged the in-State tuition rate regardless of the 12-month residency requirements. This bill will also provide for a minimum of two days per academic year for excused absences related to a legal guardian’s service in a combat zone. Johnson believes this will take some of the financial pressure off of veterans coming home and will allow them to obtain high quality education and training while being close to their family.
In addition to that bill, the house voted on the Vets Children/Short-Term Workforce Training Bill. This would allow the children of wartime veterans receiving a Class I-A, Class I-b, or IV to use those funds to cover the cost of short-term workforce training courses that would lead to industry credentials. Johnson voted in favor of this bill in hopes that it will not only be a benefit to military families, but also a benefit to many employers in the district looking for qualified and talented employees.
“Thank you to those who have sacrificed so much for our great country. I believe that these two bills will go a long way in improving the lives of military veterans and their families. I believe that we have to take steps to support our military and their families while they are actively serving, as well as when they are coming home to re-enter the workforce,” said Rep. Jake Johnson (R-113).
