Magnuson requested a few minutes during the City Council to present the award and resolution to Landrum Rescue 11 because the SC House is currently out of session. He felt that the unit deserved to be recognized now, rather than having to wait until January 2020 when the next legislative session begins.

Landrum Rescue 11 has been recognized for their hard work over the last year and has won the State Emergency Medical Services System of the Year Award. The 14 members of the Rescue 11 squad were recognized and praised for their involvement in the Landrum community and for always having a fully trained paramedic available at all times.

Landrum Rescue 11 is a fully volunteer unit. In regards to that fact Magnuson said, “I think it is amazing, they are a small volunteer team and they won a prestigious state-wide award. They don’t receive any compensation from the state, county or federal government and do such an amazing job.”

Landrum Rescue 11 Captain Bruce Cogdell said, “We appreciate the resolution. Our guys do a lot of work 24/7. We had 72 calls this last month. We are proud of what we do. Sometimes people think that because you aren’t a professional (paid) that you can’t do a good job. I would rather have a volunteer help me because I know they are doing it because they care.” Cogdell continued to say that the City of Landrum was fortunate to have a good mix of paid professionals and volunteers in the community.

Below is the resolution passed by the state recognizing Rescue 11, the resolution was framed and presented to Rescue 11 Captain Bruce Cogdell by House Representative Josiah Magnuson.

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE RESCUE 11 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES SQUAD OF LANDRUM ON WINNING THE STATE EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES SYSTEM OF THE YEAR AWARD. Whereas, the Rescue 11 Emergency Medical Services Squad of Landrum won the state Emergency Medical Services System of the Year Award; and

Whereas, the award is sponsored by the South Carolina EMS Symposium; and

Whereas, the Landrum Rescue 11 Squad is a volunteer squad with fourteen members; and

Whereas, it was the squad’s ability to have a fully trained paramedic available at all times, and the group’s involvement in the community that helped it win the award; and

Whereas, the volunteers put in extra effort for the community including sponsoring the town’s annual Christmas Parade and working with local schools and civic clubs on CPR and first aid instruction; and

Whereas, the Landrum squad placed first among state squads handling fifteen hundred calls a year or less. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly congratulate the Rescue 11 Emergency Medical Services Squad of Landrum on winning the state Emergency Medical Services System of the Year Award.
