Polk County Manager Marche Pittman said the resolution is part of the plan to transition Wolverine Trail from being a private road to being a state road. The county currently owns the road, which connects Highway 108 and Silver Creek Road and includes Polk County Middle School, the Polk County Department of Social Services building and the county recreation park.

Pittman also said there is still some maintenance to do before the state would take over the road. The county in the spring had Duke Energy replace all the street lights and move them off the road further to comply with state road standards. Pittman said the county will also need to do some grading work for drainage issues prior to the state taking ownership.

Commissioners have been discussing turning the road over to the state since last year. Pittman told commissioners last year the road is getting old and will need paving soon.

Following is the resolution commissioners approved on Monday:

WHEREAS, the attached petition has been filed with the Board of Commissioners of the County of Polk requesting that the above described road (Wolverine Trail), the location of which has been indicated in red on the attached map, be added to the Secondary Road System, and

WHEREAS, the Board of County Commissioners is of the opinion that the above described road should be added to the Secondary Road System, if the road meets minimum standards and criteria established by the Division of Highways of the Department of Transportation for the addition of roads to the System.

NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved by the Board of County Commissioners of the County of Polk that the Division of Highways is hereby requested to review the above described road, and to take over the road for maintenance if it meets established standards and criteria.
