Fit to be tied: Polk battles to draw

Telling the story of the first five matches of Polk County’s girls soccer season might be summed up with an old mountain phrase – fit to be tied.

The Wolverines played to their third draw of the season Monday in chilly G.M. Tennant Stadium, matching R-S Central 3-3 in a non-conference clash.

The game was an exciting affair which saw Polk County (1-1-3) largely have the better of the action, effectively pushing the ball out of midfield into the R-S Central end of the field for scoring opportunities on numerous occasions.

The Wolverines had leads of 2-0 and 3-2, but R-S Central (3-1-1) scored with 4:43 left in the match to even the score at 3-3. Polk County had a couple of late chances deflected away, including Madison Geddings’ shot deep inside the penalty area with 20 seconds left.

Polk County grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the first half as Reese Alley’s long free kick curled toward the back post and eventually found the feet of Belen Akers, who tapped a shot home to give the Wolverines the first strike.

Polk continued to aggressively press forward into the Hilltoppers’ end, and that effort paid off late in the half as a Jen Guerrero cross was deflected into the net by an R-S Central defender, giving Polk County a 2-0 lead.

R-S Central, though, scored in the 48th minute, then added the tying goal with 16:33 left in regulation. Polk County, though, re-took the lead eight minutes later, scoring off a throw-in as Caelan Gaul found open space and the ball in the box and put a shot into the left corner of the net.

The lead would last less than four minutes as R-S Central tallied for the draw. Polk County goalkeeper Sara Muse was injured on the play and didn’t return in the final minutes.

Polk County is scheduled to return to action on Friday, traveling to West Henderson in its final non-conference match before beginning Western Highland Conference play next week at Madison.
