Unknown to many, there is a small cemetery located on the grounds at the Foothills Equestrian Nature Center (FENCE) in Tryon. Ignored and forgotten for years, volunteers at FENCE recently cleaned away the brush and added a bench and an attractive rustic wooden fence around the burial site.

“The Polk County Historical Association wants to acknowledge the extra effort and care that the volunteers at FENCE have put forth to honor those individuals in this historic cemetery.” said Pat McCool, President of the Historical Association. “We applaud the efforts of Chuck Hearon who led the clean up effort on behalf of FENCE and the families.”

According to McCool there are many older cemeteries across Polk County that are in need of care similar to the work completed at the FENCE property. He hopes that FENCE’s example will motivate others in the county to help clean up and protect the forgotten cemeteries in their community.
