G.M. Tennant Stadium felt at times Tuesday afternoon more suited for ice fishing than track and field.

But that didn’t stop a handful of teams from gathering for Polk County’s season-opening Tony Waldrop Invitational nor stop several Wolverines from posting qualifying performances for the 1A West Regional meet later this season.

Polk County’s boys and girls teams easily won the six-team competition, with the Wolverine girls rolling up 165 points to outdistance the 99 points of North Henderson. The Polk boys racked up 126.5 points to top runner-up Asheville’s 109.
