Polk County raced to an early 17-7 lead Thursday and went on to top Piedmont Community Charter 45-41 in junior varsity boys basketball play in Gastonia.

The Wolverines improved to 7-4 with the victory. Polk County returned home Friday to host Mitchell in a Western Highlands Conference matchup.

Nate Henderson scored 12 points, including a 6-of-7 effort at the foul line, to pace Polk County. Shaq Wingo added 11 points, with Bryson Edwards scoring eight and Chan Barber scoring seven.

Wes Royster scored six points, with Steven Chupp adding one for Polk County, which has won five of its last six games.
