Originally presented by Betty Doubleday Frost in 1968, “Tryon Early On” is being sponsored for area residents by the Polk County Historical Association on Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Her one-of-a-kind slideshow is packed full of historic photographs rarely seen of the village of Tryon. The audio for the slide presentation was taped during a 1973 program given by Frost at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.

Betty Frost starts her talk by saying “I ask you to try to erase your present-day picture of Tryon and go back a hundred years to 1873 and see the surrounding area.” So begins the slide show, “Tryon Early On,” by Frost, who was the granddaughter of one of the Tryon area’s earliest settlers, Gen. Ulysses S Doubleday.

The presentation was recently discovered in the Lanier Library archives by Tryon historian Robert Lange. He has sorted through Betty’s notes, the slides and the audio, in order to bring this presentation back to life for today’s audiences.

Co-host Julia Calhoun is a Tryon native whose grandparents were also among Tryon’s earliest citizens. Calhoun will share memories of her widely loved friend.

The Dec. 4 program is an encore performance of the show given at the Lanier Library in early November.  Audiences should find this informative and humorous slide program on the town of Tryon in its early days very entertaining, museum representatives said.

The program will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Polk County Historical Museum, located at 60 Walker St. in downtown Columbus. The public is invited and admission is at no cost.
