Green Creek High School Class of 1943 celebrates 75th reunion

The 75th reunion of Green Creek High School Class of 1943 was held Saturday, Oct. 20, at Fatz Restaurant in Rutherforton.
The class graduated with 23 members in 1943, with three of the five remaining members attending the Oct. 20 reunion.
Kathleen Martin, of Boiling Springs, was accompanied by her daughter, Betty Martin. Edwin Turner brought his father, Urbane Turner, of Forest City, and Shirley Gilbert, of Mill Spring, came with her daughter, Sue Hooper and her husband, Geoff.
The members who did not attend were Helon England, of Spindale, and Juanita McGuire, of Anderson, South Carolina. They both wished they could come, but could not due to health reasons.
Last year’s report ended with, “OK, everyone, hang in, we have got to make our 75th class reunion next year!”
Though attendees moved a little slower, and the health complaints were more numerous, there was laughter at high school stories and, of course, laughing at themselves for the things they do now that they would never have done a few years ago.
Gilbert told the story about her caregiver wanting to come roll her hair so she would look beautiful for the reunion. She said, “no, don’t come, no one can see or hear, it doesn’t matter how my hair looks” — but it looked nice anyway, attendees said.
Fatz employees took good care of guests, who all enjoyed their lunch, they said. There was a huge group of balloons, which everyone got to take home with them. The balloons were provided by Gilbert’s niece, Michelle McCraw, and family.
The cupcakes were a hit last year, so Hooper made them again this year in red, white and blue, the school colors of ‘43.
After the group adjourned around 3 p.m., part of the group went on to visit Helon England, who lives nearby. They delivered her a balloon, a cupcake and a “feel better” card signed by the reunion attendees.
