Rotarians participate in Reading is Fundamental at Polk Central Elementary

Recently, 11 Rotarians participated in the RIF (Reading Is Fundamental) program at Polk Central Elementary School. 

The Rotary Club of Tryon has been providing this program for 16 years. Led by Rotarian Carolyn Jones, the following members participated: Barbara Smith, Alex Hagerty, Beth McCallister, Don Lyons, Louis McCray, Les Stobbe, Judy Lair, Carol Browning, Dave Scherping and Charles McKeller, assisted by his wife Lib.

In addition to reading to the various classes, the Rotarians made hundreds of books available from which children in pre-K through the fifth grade were able to choose one book to add to their home library. Over 18,000 books have been distributed by the Rotary Club of Tryon at Polk Central Elementary School since it began this program.

One of the teachers at Polk Central, Leann Ruff Wilson, told the students that she had received one of the Rotary scholarships, which helped her attend college. The Rotary Club of Tryon awards over $20,000 in scholarships each year to high school students.
