Senior Night could not have gone much better for Polk County.
The Wolverines raced to a 2-0 lead 10 minutes into the match with Mitchell, built a 6-0 halftime lead and finally ended the match 10 minutes early with a 9-0 Western Highlands Conference victory at G.M. Tennant Stadium.
Polk County (10-9-1, 6-1) figured to have the better of play against a Mitchell team still looking for its first win. The Wolverines made certain that would be the case, dominating the evening from the outset.
Grayson Jones and Nicolas Lopez scored the two early goals, with senior Clark Phipps following with two headers off set pieces for goals. Jack Tinkler and Adam Kehrer added tallies before the half for the 6-0 lead.
Jesus Avellaneda scored two minutes into the second half, with sophomore Wylie Rauschenbach connecting from short range with 25:41 remaining. Phipps then scored his third goal with 9:26 left, that one ending the evening due to the nine-goal lead.
“We got to honor our seniors, and I’m glad we had the opportunity for people to come out and support them,” said Polk County head coach Josh Trejo, who donned a suit and tie for the evening.
“It’s been a pleasure to coach this group. They’re a good group.”
Phipps and Isaac Edwards each had two assists, with Jones, Alex Pearson and Matias Akers also adding assists.
The Wolverines, who have already clinched the top 1A seed from the WHC, will travel to Mountain Heritage on Monday for another WHC affair.
