Flat Rock stops Polk Middle soccer team’s streak, title hopes with 2-0 victory

Polk County Middle’s seven-match winning streak – and season – came to an end Friday afternoon.

The Wolverines dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision to Flat Rock in a quarterfinal match of the Blue Ridge Conference boys soccer tournament at Utz Field.

Polk Middle (10-3) hadn’t lost since a Sept. 10 1-0 rain-shortened match against Flat Rock on the same field. This time, near-perfect weather greeted both teams, but the result proved the same in the end.

Flat Rock (9-3) scored once early in the match and once late in the second half to advance to a semifinal meeting at top seed Waynesville.

Polk Middle played well, but could never get a momentum-building goal. The Wolverines did narrowly miss an equalizing chance with 20 minutes left in the second half, but Flat Rock’s defense would hold Polk at bay the rest of the way.
