Conserving Carolina to host second fall hike Friday
Published 8:00 am Tuesday, October 9, 2018
The public is invited to join Conserving Carolina on Friday for a 5-mile, moderate, out and back hike to Rich Mountain in Pisgah National Forest.
Conserving Carolina Southeast Stewardship Manager Pam Torlina will lead the hike. The group will head to the Appalachian Range District of Pisgah National Forest near Hot Springs and hike to the historic fire lookout on Rich Mountain (3,643 foot elevation).
Hikers will be invited to climb the newly restored tower to enjoy panoramic views of the surroundings, just in time for the trees to show their fall color.
Those interested in attending Friday’s hike can meet at 8:30 a.m. at the east end of the Columbus Plaza Shopping Center, 250 W. Mills St., Columbus (near Food Lion), to check in, arrange carpooling and start the approximately 1.5-hour drive to the parking area.
Those coming from an area closer to the trailhead can contact Pam Torlina to make other meeting arrangements. Hikers should be prepared to return to the area in the mid-afternoon.
Participants should not attempt any hike beyond their ability and experience. Hikers should wear appropriate clothing and footwear, bring a bag lunch and/or snack and plenty of water, and make sure to bring any personal medication they may require.
In case of inclement weather, interested hikers may contact Pam Torlina at 828-697-5777, ext. 300, or email her at pam@conservingcarolina by 8:15 a.m. on the day of the hike and/or check the Conserving Carolina Facebook page to see if the hike will take place.
