Polk County Middle played the role of giant killers on Monday.

The Wolverines handed Apple Valley its first loss since at least 2016, topping the Knights 3-1 in Blue Ridge Conference boys soccer action in Hendersonville.

Polk Middle (6-2, 4-2), which lost a 1-0 decision to Apple Valley earlier this season in a rain-shortened match, grabbed a 1-0 halftime lead over the East Division leaders in the 14th minute as Topher Pearson scored on a pass from Evan Jones.

Apple Valley (6-1-1, 4-1-1) scored in the 55th minute for the final margin.

“We worked extremely hard and everyone did their part,” said Polk Middle head coach Lennox Charles.

Charles said goalkeeper Cade Bright had three outstanding saves in the second half to help preserve the victory.

Polk County returned home Wednesday to host Hendersonville in a 4:30 p.m. match at Utz Field.
