City installs live video camera downtown

SALUDA — Anyone curious to see what is happening in Saluda can now watch it 24 hours a day.

People can check on the city’s downtown at any time for traffic, weather or to see what may be happening during a festival.

The city of Saluda installed a live video camera this week to keep an eye on downtown activities.

The camera is mounted on the roof of Saluda City Hall, located at 6 Main St., Saluda, and points east down Main Street.

The camera view shows almost all of downtown, including the sidewalks and storefronts, traffic coming into town and across the railroad tracks to Greenville Street and McCreery Park.

Saluda City Manager Jonathan Cannon said the camera cost the city $975.

The broadcast is done through YouTube Live, and does not require contracts or any outside entity to monitor. Cannon said Randy Knighten with Advance PC installed the camera.

“The camera will be a useful and fun tool for citizens, tourists and homeowners,” Cannon said. “It is a great way to look in on festivals, see the beauty and vibrant life of Main Street, and check current weather conditions. It has real potential to be an economic development tool for Saluda.

Saluda released the news of the camera installation through an email blast on Tuesday.
