Local students help renovate piece of Sunny View history

The Sunny View Club House Inc. was established in 1963 by a group of local individuals who served as stewards of the actual clubhouse building, deeded to the Sunny View community on June 1, 1963.

The building is a log cabin constructed in the 1930s. One of the most significant uses of the building was in the 1950s, when the Sunny View School burned, and the clubhouse served as a classroom while the school was in repair.

Throughout the years, the clubhouse has been preserved to the best of the small resources allowed. Siding was placed over the exterior logs, the bathroom was enlarged to accommodate a wheel chair, the chimney has been capped off due to cracking and the kitchen floor and ceiling were completely replaced. These repairs kept the building standing, but more was needed to be done.

A grant from the Polk County Community Foundation helped pay for renovations to the historic Sunny View Club House, with local high school students helping perform the work. (Submitted photos)

This year, the clubhouse received a grant from the Polk County Community Foundation for the much needed repairs that would preserve the building for many more years. The clubhouse partnered with the Rimer Corporation (Keith Rimer) and his Polk County High School class to complete all the work.

His students worked diligently in the heat and humidity, most days arrived to work earlier than the Rimer carpentry crew. The clubhouse cannot express the hard work these students put in to these repairs, representatives said.

Renovations completed were: enlarged handicapped accessible door, new long-life siding on the exterior, soffits replaced, overhangs added to each side of the front porch for better draining and a covering built over the back ramp.

Members would like to thank the Polk County Community Foundation and the Rimer Corporation and his high school class. Class participants are as follows: Heath Price, Evan Rimer, Megan Ward, Wil Rimer, Elizebeth Brice, John Cantrell, Austin Geagley and Gavin Brady.
