St. Luke’s Hospital recently received a $170,000 grant from The Duke Endowment that will help fund start-up operating and capital costs of a Saluda family medicine clinic.

The new clinic, located at 1347 Ozone Drive, Suite 2, is now open and serving residents of Saluda and beyond.  Dr. Lisa J. Broyles, is happy to be recognized as Saluda’s hometown doctor and pleased to have the support from St. Luke’s Hospital, she said.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity, not just for me, but for the people of Saluda,” said Dr. Broyles, who is now seeing patients Tuesdays and Thursdays.

When St. Luke’s Hospital Board of Trustees embarked on a strategic planning process in late 2016, research and analytics quickly indicated the county had an acute shortage primary care providers.

“Improving access to care was one of the board’s highest priorities,” said Jim Bross, chief executive office for St. Luke’s Hospital. “With Dr. Broyles as the primary provider, Saluda Family Medicine now offers timely, quality and convenient access to the full spectrum of primary care services in a rural, underserved community.”

“In today’s challenging health care environment, rural communities are struggling to meet citizens’ needs,” said Lin Hollowell, director of health care for The Duke Endowment. “This new medical clinic from St. Luke’s Hospital offers a promising example of how rural communities can rise to the challenge.”

Based in Charlotte and established in 1924 by industrialist and philanthropist James B. Duke, The Duke Endowment is a private foundation that strengthens community in North Carolina and South Carolina by nurturing children, promoting health, educating minds and enriching spirits, representatives said. Since its founding, it has distributed more than $3.6 billion in grants.
