Mary Thelma “Doodle” Chambers

Mary Thelma “Doodle” Chambers, 97, of Tryon, North Carolina, passed away Monday, June 18, 2018.

Born Jan. 15, 1921, in Homer, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late George M. and Mary T. Chambers. After graduating from Piedmont College, Demorest, Georgia, in 1947, she spent 12 years with the National Organization of Camp Fire Girls. In 1959, she began as co-director at Camp Ton-A-Wanda in Hendersonville, North Carolina, where she retired after 26 years.

After retirement, she volunteered for seven summers in Frakes, Kentucky, at the Henderson Settlement working with children and in the greenhouses as part of the Red Bird Missionary Conference of the Methodist Church. Mrs. Chambers was an active member of Tryon United Methodist Church.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Marion C. Brown and Edna C. Carpenter; one niece, Beverly B. Davis.

Thelma is survived by a niece, Regina D. Williams (Larry); a nephew, Aubrey Brown Jr. (Becky); three great-nieces and three great-nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
