Memorial Day ceremony to take place in Columbus Monday

A Memorial Day service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Polk Memorial Garden Cemetery in Columbus to pay tribute to those heroic patriots who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The program will be conducted by members of the Polk County Memorial Post 9116 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Auxiliary, McFarland Funeral Chapel & Crematory and the Polk County Memorial Honor Guard.

Opening Prayer will be given by Chris Osborn, chaplain for McFarland Funeral Home. The guest speaker will be George B. Baker, a U.S. Air Force veteran a 25-year-resident of Tryon, and past Tryon town commissioner.

The Polk County VFW Post 9116 officers and Auxiliary officers, along with the Polk County Memorial Honor Guard, will conclude the Memorial Day ceremony with the laying of a wreath and flowers whose colors have special meanings for this day. This will be followed with the presentation of a small American Flag, a 21-gun salute and the playing of taps.
