Capt. Lowell Griffin said deputies assigned to the Polk Aggressive Criminal Enforcement Team observed a vehicle traveling in the Columbus area operating in an erratic manner.

“The vehicle was then stopped and the deputies quickly became suspicious of the driver and his intentions,” Griffin said. “A K-9, ‘Rento,’ who is assigned to PACE, was utilized to conduct a sniff of the vehicle. Rento provided a positive indication on the vehicle, which the deputies then searched for contraband.”

Griffin said deputies found several pounds of marijuana hidden inside the vehicle.

Newman was arrested and charged and is currently free on bond, according to sheriff reports.
