Positives beginning to surface for young Polk Middle softball squad

Correction: A previous version of this story had the incorrect name of one of the eighth-grade players on the team. It has been corrected below.

The sun did not shine much Monday afternoon at Polk County Recreation Complex, but the day still felt a lot brighter for Polk County Middle’s softball team.

A young and fairly inexperienced team has made for a slow start to the season for the Wolverines. But Monday’s 15-7 loss to Flat Rock showed that Polk Middle is improving under first-year head coach Jamie Hrobak.

The Wolverines put together a couple of rallies during the game, the lineup delivering key hits to produce the team’s best offensive showing this season. That gave Hrobak reason to smile at day’s end.

“Our bats were so much better,” Hrobak said. “We were swinging at good pitches and we wanted to hit the ball. Our energy was up at the plate.”

Polk Middle has just three eighth graders – Keeleigh Bradley, Carly Lawter and Jaylan Brady – and Hrobak has been pleased with what that trio is doing for the squad.

“I’m really proud of those eighth graders for their leadership for what they’re bringing to the team, and how they’re fighting,” Hrobak said.

Polk Middle (0-5) wraps up its pre-spring break schedule on Wednesday, traveling to Brevard Middle.
